Side Events

As a side event to Legal Design Summit, Ornamo organizes a workshop on the protection of service concepts. Legal Design Summit wants to bring design into the field of law. Likewise, understanding of law is needed in the field of design. The aim of the workshop is to bring together service designers and lawyers to create better ways to protect a service concept.

In the field of design, the focus is moving from product design to branding, concepting and service business innovation. Service concept protection is a relatively new and little-researched field, and there is no clear type of IP protection available for concepts,” says Ornamo’s lawyer Iiris Adenius.

We find it important for Ornamo to be present in creating practices for new applications for design. Working together with the Legal Design Summit is a wonderful chance for us to develop protection practices in cooperation with legal professionals, but also a possibility to be part of bringing user experience to law.

The design field supports the competitiveness, growth and globalization of businesses and Finland. As the national organization for the field, the Finnish Association of Designers Ornamo advances the profession of designers, provides information about the field and promotes the role of design in society.”

Generating a common language for GDPR

"GDPR in three simple steps..." "Complying with GDPR is easy..." – Let's face the truth: Tackling GDPR is complex. A solution demands an adequate holistic approach.

The startup Portyr tackles this complex challenge with a tight team of experts in the fields of technology, law and design. The team generates a common, open language and translates GDPR into actionable steps, making the General Data Protection Regulation an asset to both companies and individuals.

For the LDS participants, Portyr opens their doors to explore and discuss together the generation of a common industry language to describe personal data and its potential impact, especially from a company perspective. The workshop builds on a design-led approach, encouraging visual communication such as mapping out services and stakeholders which are involved in the GDPR. Further, the workshop offers an outline of a potential open, common language as a foundation to extend the discussion of current and future prospects of the GDPR. The outcomes of the workshop will be summarized and shared with the participants.

Before starting with the practical work, a light breakfast will be offered at 9am.

On 30 October, join Finnish legal innovators and Legal Hackers chapter organizers from around the world for a drink at Kaisla. The meetup is being hosted in conjunction with the Helsinki Legal Tech Meetup, which is changing its name to Helsinki Legal Hackers.

Legal Hackers is the largest grassroots movement of legal innovators in the world, with over 50 chapters on five continents. The mission of Legal Hackers is to foster creative problem solving at the intersection of law and technology (what we call "legal hacking"). Since its inception in 2012 in Brooklyn, NY, Legal Hackers have hosted hackathons to improve access to justice; taught lawyers coding and design thinking; and convened experts on a range of topics including artificial intelligence, blockchain technology, cybersecurity, drones, intellectual property, the sharing economy, and many more. You can learn more here:

At this side event, we will have chapter organizers from Colombia, Estonia, Finland, Nashville, and New York City who are visiting to speak at the Brainfactory and Legal Design Summit. At the event, we will share a bit about the relationship between "legal hacking" and legal design, the importance of community in legal innovation, and how you can get involved in the movement.
